The Balkan Wars were the first big test to the Committee of Union and Progress, just after the Italian occupation (1911) of Libya. The three new Balkan states formed at the end of the 19th century, as well as Montenegro, sought additional territories from Albania, Macedonia, and Thrace, on nationalism-based grounds. The incomplete emergence of these nation-states on the fringes of the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century set the stage for the Balkan Wars. Initially, with the encouragement of Russia, a series of agreements were concluded between Serbia and Bulgaria in March 1912 and between Greece and Bulgaria in May 1912. Montenegro subsequently concluded agreements between Serbia and Bulgaria in October 1912. The Serbian-Bulgarian agreement specifically called for the partition of Macedonia, which resulted in the First Balkan War. The Second Balkan War soon followed. The political downfall of balkan wars reflected as coup of 1913, which had set the environment for the famous Three Pashas.

The First Balkan War ended with the Treaty of London signed on 30 May 1913. The Balkan allies Serbia, Montenegro, Greece and Bulgaria had ejected the Turks from Europe with the exception of the Chatalja and Gallipoli peninsulas.

However, even before the treaty had been signed, Greece and Serbia had signed a military pact aimed against Bulgaria that divided the disputed region of Macedonia between them. Bulgaria felt that their territorial rewards from the war, particularly in Macedonia, were insufficient. A further problem for Bulgaria was the attitude of Romania. They claimed the Bulgarian fortress of Silistria on the Danube as the price for their neutrality in the First Balkan war. This was a price the Bulgarians were not prepared to pay.

Russian arbitration provided for in the 1912 treaty was progressing slowly. The Russians didn't wish to lose either of their allies in the Balkans (Serbia and Bulgaria). Whilst negotiations were ongoing low level warfare continued in Macedonia mainly between Serbian and Bulgarian troops. The Bulgarian military ordered limited attacks on June 29/30 against Serbian and Greek positions, apparently to strengthen their government's bargaining position. This gave the Serbs and Greeks the opportunity to present themselves as the victims of aggression.

The civilian governments were not entirely in control and Russia the one power able to intervene - dithered. For Bulgaria the war gave them the opportunity to acquire all Macedonia and dominate the Balkans. The Ottoman Empire joins the Central Powers in World War I.The Ottoman Empire took part in the Middle Eastern theatre of World War I, under the terms of the Ottoman-German Alliance. The Ottoman Empire had some successes in the beginning years of the war, particularly at the Battle of Gallipoli. There were some setbacks as well, however, in particular the disastrous Caucasus Campaign against the Russians. Also, in the winter of 1915-16, the Ottoman government ordered all Armenians deported from eastern Anatolia as a response to Armenian rebellions. In the course of this deportation some 50,000 to 1.5 million Armenians died. The Armenian resistance at the Van was significant event, which its core become the Administration for Western Armenia. The Russian Revolution of 1917 gave the Ottomans a chance to regain some of their lost ground; however, continued British offensives ultimately proved to be too much. The Ottomans were eventually defeated due to key attacks by the British general Edmund Allenby, as well as assistance from the Arab Revolt, the Democratic Republic of Armenia. The initial peace agreement with the Ottoman Empire was the Armistice of Mudros, followed by the Treaty of Sèvres, the treaty which granted recognition to the Republic of Armenia. The United Kingdom obtained virtually everything it had sought—according to the secret Sykes-Picot Agreement made together with France in 1916, while the war was still going on—from the empire's partition. The other powers of the Triple Entente, however, soon became entangled in the Turkish War of Independence.

STRAITS takes the opening bombardment at the Dardanelles not as the starting point but as its culmination in an endeavour to explain how it was that Turkey was aligned with Germany — a ruinous alliance which was by no means preordained. British diplomatic policy towards the Ottoman Empire failed comprehensively when the result could have been so different. Why, for example, was every Turkish appeal for an alliance with Britain rebuffed?The Young Turk revolution of 1908 presented the British Foreign Office with a quandary — to support the new régime, which had successfully restored the constitution, or continue to remain aloof, as had been the policy during the reign of Abdul the Damned. Support was grudgingly provided but the improved British position at the Sublime Porte was jeopardized by two events: the new Ambassador, who was deeply antagonistic to the new régime, and the Anglo - Russian convention which meant that the British Foreign Secretary had to try somehow to support the Turks without alienating the Russians.

The common thread running through the book is the struggle to control the Straits of the Dardanelles and Bosphorus from the period when the British Squadron at Malta commanded the Mediterranean Sea unopposed at the turn of the century through to the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire first as a result of the Turco - Italian and Balkan Wars and then following Turkey’s forced, and ultimately disastrous, entry into World War I. This struggle encompassed Russian aspirations, Greek ambition, French colonial ardour and British Imperial and oil considerations — all underpinned by the constant desire of the Turks themselves to prevent the collapse of their Empire.

The Gallipoli campaign was a disaster from beginning to end. The mission was ineptly commanded and poorly equipped. After nine months of deadlock and the loss of more than 100,000 lives the allies eventually withdrew their attack on the peninsula. The campaign took place between 25 April 1915 and 9 January 1916. The offensive's ultimate aim was to push through the Dardanelles straits and capture Constantinople, the Turkish capital. If a breakthrough had been achieved, the Turks, who were allied with the central powers (Austria and Germany), would have been unable to prevent Britain and France from joining the Russians in the war against Austria-Hungary and Turkey. After the previous failure of the British and French naval fleets to take the Gallipoli peninsula, the allies felt there was little alternative but to attempt an amphibious landing. The Anzacs were pinned down on the beaches On 25 April two landings were made; the main force of 35,000 men under Lieutenant General Hunter Weston landed at Cape Helles. This was supported by a smaller force of 17,000 men from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzacs) under General Sir William Birdwood. This force landed at what became known as Anzac cove, a mile north of their intended destination and surrounded by deep cliffs. The Anzacs were to move inland and seize the Sari Bari heights but soon met with a Turkish counterattack, commanded by Mustapha Kemal, the future president of the Turkish Republic. By nightfall the Anzacs had suffered 2,000 casualties and were fighting to stay on the beach. The force at Cape Helles had also made little progress and come under attack from the Turks. For two weeks allies remained on the beaches losing one third of their force. Much of the failure has been attributed to poor coordination and leadership from the British General Sir Ian Hamilton, who chose to command the whole operation from aboard a ship. Another 25,000 men were landed near Anzac Cove and more at Cape Helles in August. The allies made another thrust, but to no avail. Deadlock on the beaches persisted. The whole offensive was finally called off in December and troops evacuated. Although the campaign had taken some of the pressure off the Russian front, its overall failure encouraged Bulgaria to ally with the central powers. During the 10 months the allied forces had been pinned down by the Turks, more than 90,000 had become sick with dysentery and frostbite. The Gallipoli campaign also cost the lives of more than 100,000 allied and Turkish soldiers with another quarter of a million wounded.

Pan-Germanism and the German Professors 1914–1918

               拿破崙其中一項成就是將擁有超過1,000個邦國的神聖羅馬帝國改組成39個更簡化的邦國，這些邦國組成了德意志邦聯和後來1871年建立的德意志帝國的基礎。普魯士首相奧托·馮·俾斯麥能夠將這39個邦國統一成一個國家有數個關鍵原因。多年前泛日耳曼主義的興起已經開始了德意志的統一運動，最初與自由主義相關。1848年革命 — 歐洲面臨經濟蕭條的一段時間 — 中止了德意志邦聯嘗試統一的計劃。這更清楚顯示了奧地利帝國並不適合成為推動統一德意志的代表。

Frederick III (German: Friedrich III., Deutscher Kaiser und König von Preußen; 18 October 1831 -- 15 June 1888) was German Emperor and King of Prussia for 99 days in 1888 during the Year of the Three Emperors. Frederick William Nicholas Charles (German: Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Karl), known informally as Fritz, was the only son of Emperor William I, and was raised in his family's tradition of military service. Although celebrated as a young man for his leadership and successes during the Second Schleswig, Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars, he nevertheless professed a hatred of warfare, and was praised by friends and enemies alike for his humane conduct. Following the unification of Germany in 1871 his father, then King of Prussia, became the German Emperor, and on William's death at the age of 90 on 9 March 1888, the throne passed to Frederick, having by then been the Crown Prince for twenty-seven years. Frederick was suffering from cancer of the larynx and died on 15 June 1888, aged 57, following unsuccessful medical treatments for his condition.

The Princess Victoria, Princess Royal (Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa; 21 November 1840 -- 5 August 1901) was the eldest child and daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. She was created Princess Royal of the United Kingdom in 1841. She became German Empress and Queen of Prussia by marriage to German Emperor Frederick III. After her husband's death, she became widely known as Empress Frederick (or, in German: "Kaiserin Friedrich").

1918 德國爆發「十二月革命」，駐紮於基爾(Kiel)的海軍水兵舉事，德國停戰，第一次大戰結束，德國戰敗，在左派革命份子的要求下，德皇威廉二世退位，帝國瓦解。社會民主黨魁夏德曼(Philipp Scheidemann)宣佈共和。
